Q: Who is MIY Makerspace and what do you do?

A: MIY (Make it Yourself) Makerspace is small group of multidisciplinary engineers who occupy a well-equipped accessible shop area where their clients can come to share resources and knowledge, create projects, network, and construct.  MIY provides their clients with tools and a community setting complete with infrastructure. Highly trained expert advisers are usually available for consultation but their clients can get help from other users in the MIY Makerspace.

Q: What is a Makerspace?

A: A Makerspace or also called a Hackerspace is often associated with fields such as engineering, computer science, and graphic design. The concept emerges from the technology-driven “maker culture,” which drives small makers as well as small business. This idea of a collaborative rental space for inventors and hobbyists has caught hold in education, where the informal combination of lab, shop, and conference room form an interesting infrastructure for learning through hands-on exploration.

Q: Who can join?

A: Anyone. MIY is an open environment welcome to anyone who wants to create, invent learn or just share ideas. The shop is equipped with proper tools and machines so that just about any project can be realized for prototypes, inventions, work projects and equipment.

Q: How does it work?

A: Our Maker Space is paid for from sponsorship, membership fees and donations. We require subscriptions to function and expand. We also need to cover basic monthly costs and invest in tools and consumables for the members of the Makerspace. If you’d would like to become a member, contact us or see us in person or drop into our discussion group.

In all cases MIY is open to the public for free but consumables are charged extra. There are 3 types of membership for use of the facilities, tools and machines.

  1. Basic cardholder which entitles use of all machines and labs except coworking space at their respective rates. Billed by time.
  2. Monthly membership min (3 months). Card holders have unlimited use of the labs, all machines and all hand tools. CNC machines are extra and billed by time.
  3. Coworking where the membership not only includes the shop space and basic infrastructure but a fixed space is saved exclusively for the member rates are from 300chf per month

CNC Mill large: 0.8/min, Mid: 0.7/min, Small: 0.6/min
Metal structure lab saws and drills: 0.2/min
Electronics and programming stations 0.1/min
Vinyl cutter or Plotter 0.5/min
Laser cutter 40W: 0.8/min, 100W: 1.2/min
