What you can expect during this course

This course will introduce you to the laser cutter. A laser cutter is a machine that’s controlled by computer software to cut thin pieces of wood, steel, paper, cardboard, and plastics. You will learn how to program with A2 dimensional drawing program shapes and forms. You will learn how to categorize these shapes and forms into information that the computer translates into vectors which can be given to the machine to cut. You’ll learn how to set the parameters and configure the laser cutting machine so that you can cut various thicknesses and types of materials.

The goal of this course is to make you autonomous in the way that you don’t need anyone’s help to use the machine and explore the possibilities yourself. You won’t be a pro from the beginning, but you’ll be confident enough to explore the machine yourself or to enter our next two levels of laser cutting courses.

About the equipment used in this course

Laser cutting is a machining process that consists of cutting material using a large amount of energy generated by a laser and concentrated on a very small area. This has two purposes: to cut plates entirely or to apply engravings. In this course, the student learns how to process machining data in relation to materials. The power of our laser makes it possible to cut plastic sheets up to a thickness of 10mm. After this training, you will be able to operate the machine independently.

Laser cutter machines have been around for many years and are very useful for doing prototypes in two dimensions. They’re also quite useful for cutting thin pieces of wood to do quick projects or add and added value to a project that’s already been made. Laser cutters can engrave as well as cut which makes them versatile and easy to use. The piece does not have to be bolted to the table and can be just placed on top lightly and then cut without any axial force. This is a great advantage for prototyping or where a large series of pieces is needed. The machine is also quicker than a milling machine when it comes to engraving as it uses a beam of concentrated light to engrave materials very quickly. The machine can be tuned and focused to have a really sharp edge and a very precise line when it cuts.

Our advice

Lasers And CNC machines can be very dangerous machines because they use a light that is concentrated and is not visible to the human eye therefore special glasses must be used. These special laser glasses will be supplied to you from one of our staff and will protect your eyes from any damage. Normal sunglasses won’t work, and other equipment should be checked with our staff before you decide to use them. Also, special ventilation is used because the fumes can be poisonous and need to be evacuated accordingly. If you have any asthma or any problems with respiratory problems let us know beforehand, then we can act accordingly with our laser cutter.
