What you can expect to learn during this wood turning

The wood lathe has been around since the dawn of time and is a welcome addition to any shop. Whether you want to make salt and pepper shakers, baseball bats, pool cues or just about any cylindrical wooden object, you will need a wood lathe. You will take the first steps that you need to master the wood lathe including choosing what piece you need to use a wood lathe and what tools you can use.

You will also learn how to treat your tools with respect and how to sharpen them so that they have the best effect on your projects. Tool use is very important when using a lathe for wood because it can determine the surface finish on your piece.

This course is a practical course which means that it doesn’t just cover the basics of using a wood lathe, it also gives you the chance to build an actual project. This project can include a pen made from wood, a tool handle or a salt and pepper shaker. This is a very popular course with beginners because you don’t need any experience whatsoever in woodwork to take the course. This is a good introduction to the metal lathe as the principle is the same but the tool changes and it’s less dangerous for beginners. This course can be taken in a small group or one-on-one with one of our engineers.

About the equipment used in this course

we will be using a wood lathe for this course equipped with all the tools that we need to make a practical project. This is a manual machine which requires no computer and no digital display because all the operations are manual. Contrary to a metal lathe the tool is held in a hand while the piece is spinning in rotation in front of us. Wood leads can be used to make salt and pepper shakers, baseball bats and pool cues. They can also be quite useful in repairing cylindrical objects because of the nature of the rotation.

The course will be taken on a small lathe that can handle pieces up to 300 millimeters long but in advanced courses we will have a larger lathe at our disposal to do longer pieces. This is an introductory course, so you don’t need any experience beforehand to enroll.

Our advice

Because this is a rotational machine, and it is advised not to wear any loose clothing and to tie your hair back as tight as possible so it doesn’t get trapped in the machine where it can hurt us. It’s also advised to use our gloves and our safety glasses that we supply on the day of the course. The machine may be dangerous but if used correctly can be a lot of fun and you can make a lot of beautiful pieces with it. We also advise you to wear work clothes as the machine can kick up the dust and you can get dirty easily.
