What you can expect to learn during this CNC woodwork course

Since we opened our doors in 2016, this has remained the most popular course that we have. This course allows you to learn the basics of working with wood by using a numerically controlled CNC milling router. CNC refers to a computer-controlled cutter that is usually programmed by a computer and some CAD software. The program then gets translated into machine code language where a machine can read line by line and follow the instructions to cut your project.

You will learn the basics of CAD programming and design to be able to design and draw your conceptions before you start cutting. You will also learn how to translate this two-dimensional drawing file from CAD format into Cam format so that a machine can follow the instructions. Lastly you will learn how to use the pilot program for the CNC milling router to calibrate it and cut the conception that you have drawn.

You also learn the basics and the logic needed to use a machine for basic wood projects. The first course in CNC woodwork usually covers two-dimensional drawing and two-dimensional cutting. These two-dimensional forms can be assembled into three-dimensional objects like birdhouses, bookcases, cupboards, and cutting boards. The goal of this course is to make you autonomous on CAD programming to communicate with a CNC milling machine.

About the computer-controlled CNC machines used in this course

CNC machines have been used in woodwork for many years and make the job easier and more precise. Measurements do not have to be made and the machine can be programmed very precisely to make pieces that normally we would have to spend a lot of time and planning to construct. The use of simple home computers and CAD software simplifies our task where we can program what we want and the machine, in the end, followers are simple instructions to cut the piece with precision.

We will be using a Badog Artisan 22 CNC computer controlled milling machine and the Badog CAD software that is bundled with the machine. This program is easy to use and one of the simplest on the market to do 2 dimensional conceptions in a virtual world. This program also allows you to transform the two-dimensional CAD drawing into machine code so that the machine can follow the instructions and cut out your pieces.

The machine itself has a capacity of 300 millimeters by 600 millimeters and 100 millimeters in height and can be used for hardwoods, softwoods, and even metallic plates. The milling head is q 1 kilowatt milling head that allows you to take large passes through wood. You’ll be working on a real machine with real CAD software that can be found in a normal industry setting. Or in a small shop.

We will also be using power tools like drills to fix the piece on the table safely.

Our advice

We will supply you with the necessary equipment to use the machine safely. Safety equipment such as goggles, gloves, and clothing will be supplied to you in house. If you have your own safety equipment or work clothes, you are welcome to bring it and use it at your own risk. It’s a good idea to enroll early and let us know if you have any requirements for the CNC machining course or any other course for that matter. We also have a couple of parking spots available in front of the shop, but they must be reserved.
